Role Overview

SGS is seeking a Civil Engineering Learner in Nelspruit. This is an excellent opportunity for young graduates looking to gain hands-on field and laboratory experience within a world-class testing environment.

Key Responsibilities

Site & Workshop Duties

  • Clean and prepare work areas after tasks or at the end of each day.
  • Ensure all materials, tools, and consumables are removed and the area is left safe and tidy.

Quality & Safety Compliance

  • Follow SGS quality and safety standards at all times.
  • Report irregularities, deviations, and non-conformances immediately.

Field & Laboratory Testing

Perform accurate sampling, testing, and related calculations, including:

  • Density testing
  • Stockpile/layer sampling
  • Manufacturing and handling concrete cubes
  • DCP testing
  • Ring & Ball tests (road surfaces)
  • Sand patch tests
  • On-site viscosity tests
  • Asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregate sampling
  • Assisting with laboratory quality control under supervision

General Operational Support

  • Perform any other tasks assigned by supervisors or managers.
  • Uphold discipline and professionalism in the department.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • NQF Level 4 / Diploma in Civil Engineering
  • Computer literate (Microsoft Office – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • English language proficiency

YES Programme Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be 18–30 years old
  • Be unemployed
  • Have no criminal record
  • Be willing to relocate to Nelspruit
  • Be physically fit and able to lift/move samples
