The family of 27-year-old Siyanda Mthokozisi Mvelase is shattered after he was killed in Johannesburg, just two days after starting his new job as an Uber driver.
According to his aunt, Zanele Khuzwayo, Siyanda had only recently relocated from KwaZulu-Natal to Johannesburg, seeking better job opportunities. Determined to create a brighter future and support his family back home, he worked hard to save for a car — a huge milestone in his life. Just two weeks ago, he proudly purchased the vehicle that would become his work tool and the start of a promising new chapter.

On Monday, Siyanda began his new role as an Uber driver, full of hope and ambition. His plan was simple: work hard, build financial stability, and help his family. But by Wednesday, tragedy struck, ending his life abruptly and leaving his loved ones in disbelief.
Khuzwayo described her nephew as a respectful, hardworking young man who always put his family first. He had been overjoyed about his new career, often sharing how he planned to improve his living conditions and assist relatives in KwaZulu-Natal.

While the full details of Siyanda’s death remain unclear, his family confirmed that he died while on duty as an e-hailing driver. His sudden and violent passing has amplified concerns over the safety of ride-hailing drivers in Johannesburg, where attacks on Uber and Bolt drivers have been making headlines.

Khuzwayo expressed the family’s grief and shock, saying:
“It’s unimaginable that someone who had just started working could lose their life so soon. Siyanda was a young man full of dreams, who never got the chance to live them out.”
Community members and fellow e-hailing drivers have rallied in support of the family, offering condolences and calling for stronger safety measures for drivers in high-risk areas. Advocacy groups are again urging authorities and ride-hailing companies to implement emergency alert systems, GPS monitoring, and closer cooperation with police.
Siyanda’s death has intensified the public outcry for urgent changes to protect drivers, who often work alone and face the constant threat of robberies, hijackings, and violent attacks — especially at night or in unfamiliar neighbourhoods.
For Siyanda’s family, the immediate priority is to grieve and prepare for his burial in KwaZulu-Natal, fulfilling his wish to one day return home — tragically, not in the way anyone expected.
As Johannesburg continues to grapple with the safety crisis facing gig-economy workers, Siyanda’s story stands as a painful reminder of the risks they face every day — and the urgent need for reform.
