Minimum requirements
Applicants must have:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC)
- English Home Language or First Additional Language: Level 4 (50–59%)
- Life Sciences: Level 4 (50–59%)
- Mathematics: Level 3 (40–49%) or
- Mathematical Literacy: Level 4 (50–59%)
- 0–1 year of relevant work experience
- Basic computer literacy
What you’ll learn
The 24-month programme combines classroom learning with practical workplace training, including:
- Blood collection (venous and capillary)
- Collection of non-blood specimens
- Patient care and communication
- Laboratory safety and infection control
- Confidentiality and ethics
- Preparation for the HPCSA board examination
After successful completion
Learners who successfully complete the programme and pass the HPCSA board examination may qualify to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Phlebotomy Technician, subject to meeting all registration requirements.
