Job Purpose

The Teller is responsible for processing customer banking transactions accurately, securely, and efficiently while providing outstanding customer service. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with banking regulations, safeguard cash, prevent fraud, and assist customers with their day-to-day banking needs.

Key Responsibilities

Cash Handling

Successful candidates will:

  • Process customer deposits and withdrawals.
  • Receive and pay out cash accurately.
  • Process cheque deposits and cheque encashments.
  • Handle drafts, traveller’s cheques, and other financial instruments.
  • Count cash using approved counting equipment.
  • Balance and reconcile the cash drawer throughout the day.
  • Prepare daily cash reconciliation reports.
  • Request additional cash when required.
  • Return surplus cash according to branch procedures.

Customer Service

Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering professional and friendly customer service.
  • Assisting customers with banking enquiries.
  • Explaining banking procedures and documentation requirements.
  • Helping customers complete banking forms correctly.
  • Promoting self-service banking options, including ATMs and Internet Banking.
  • Providing updates on customer enquiries.
  • Escalating unresolved customer issues when necessary.
  • Maintaining a clean and professional workstation.

Sales Support

The Teller will also:

  • Identify customer banking needs.
  • Generate quality sales referrals.
  • Refer customers to Sales Consultants where appropriate.
  • Promote Absa products, services, and campaigns.
  • Encourage customers to use digital banking channels.
  • Support the branch in achieving sales targets.

Compliance and Risk Management

Duties include:

  • Verifying customer identity before processing transactions.
  • Following Anti-Money Laundering (AML) procedures.
  • Detecting and reporting suspicious or fraudulent transactions.
  • Complying with South African Reserve Bank (SARB) regulations.
  • Safeguarding cash, keys, teller stamps, and security devices.
  • Following branch opening and closing procedures.
  • Completing all required registers accurately.
  • Adhering to fraud prevention policies.
  • Participating in regular cash counts and internal audits.

Daily Operational Tasks

Successful applicants will:

  • Open and close the teller workstation according to branch procedures.
  • Maintain accurate transaction records.
  • Read operational notices, circulars, and fraud alerts.
  • Ensure teller equipment is functioning correctly.
  • Report equipment faults promptly.
  • Complete end-of-day balancing and reconciliation.
  • Ensure all transactions are properly authorised.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • A Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC) in Business, Commerce and Management Studies.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Good numerical skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • The ability to work under pressure.
  • A professional attitude and appearance.
  • High levels of honesty and integrity.

Previous banking or customer service experience will be an added advantage.
